Andrea is a visual artist who grew up in Berkeley, California. She received a B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College,(1968), an M.A. in Painting and Printmaking from Hunter College, (1972), and an M.S.in Museum Leadership from Bank Street College of Education, (1992).
She explores the intersection between natural and synthetic materials like wire, glitter and paint in novel and arresting ways, prompting viewers to recognize and reflect on our natural environment. The pairing of natural and inorganic materials often adds an element of surprise to her work.
The subject of memory provided another fertile source for Lilienthal. Throughout her career, the iconic image of a young girl's dress from the '50s served as a container of meaning in both sculpture and two dimensions.
